Australia has always been a destination that I have longed to visit. Every since I was little I was enthralled by the unique wildlife, the funny accent and the thrill of it being half way across the world. I can’t believe that I have arrived. It’s been half a year of planning the unknown and now it’s time to live. But it’s hard to flip the switch and go into travel mode, which is exactly what I experienced as soon as I arrived in Melbourne. I felt lost, disconnected and very tired. The 26-hour flight did not help. With not a soul that I could rely on, I had to push through it and figure out how to make all these built up expectations and plans come together.
Not knowing fully how to do that I forced myself to jump in and get involved. Also, I was lucky enough to book a few days of work at Stereosonic 2011, a gigantic music festival held at the Showground’s in Melbourne. I started work the third day in and immediately made some great contacts and learned a lot about what Melbourne as a city was about. In a nutshell, Melbourne is a very artsy, creative and young city that is surrounded by unbelievable natural landscapes. It reminded me of Brooklyn, NY a lot, minus Manhattan being next door.
My next trip was down the Great Ocean Rd. This is one of the most beautiful drives I have ever been on. Rolling hills, long stretches of untouched beaches and gigantic rainforests. I had been anxiously awaiting my first trip to the beach and it turned out to be an unforgettable one. The ocean water was so clear and pure. It felt like it healed all my wounds and troubles. I saw everything from Torquay (the birthplace of surfing) to the Twelve Apostles (Australian Landmark see below)
After making down the Great Ocean Rd, the next stop was the Grampian Mountains. At first I was hesitant on making this extra day trip, but I am very glad I did. I really got a chance to get out and see some wildlife and explore some mountains. The best was at night though. Where a few people and I made a fire and watched the kangaroos hop down the road while we tipped back a few drinks. It was really cool to see wildlife up close and personal like that. Anyways, check out the pictures below. Stayed tune for more to come. Here are some tunes I enjoyed on this part of my trip as well.
