AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND got WOPPED

Merry Christmas! I am currently flying 30,000 feet above the sky to Queenstown, New Zealand. It’s weird that I am not in Syracuse with family and friends for the holiday. Everyone asks me if I am missing a snowy Christmas, but after hearing that there is not much white back home, I can say that I am very satisfied with 75 and sunny. The past week has been a whirlwind though. My cousin Kevin who lives in Auckland has been more then a gracious host and has really helped out in the planning and execution of the New Zealand part of the trip.

Early this week I added a few travel companions and we hit the ground running. My cousin Scott decided to make a two week stop in New Zealand before he flies out to Chang Mai, Thailand. Also Nick, one of my best friends from St. Lawrence University, decided to make the trip over from Boston to travel with me for the next month or so. I am so happy to see some familiar faces!

Scott arrived a few days before Nick, so we decided to go to the black sand beaches on the west coast on New Zealand. I believe the sand is black due to the amount of iron from the volcanic ash. Anyways, we chose to go to Piha Beach and it was well worth the trip. I have never seen a beach that untouched before. Huge bluffs with Pohutakawa’s all in full bloom. You walk to the main beach and there were probably 20 people there, but you walk around the bend along the rocks and you can have your own private beach. It was amazing day.

The very next day Scott and I decided to take a ferry to the volcanic island of Raingitoto. This place was sweet. It had great view of Auckland from the top and you could explore a few different lava caves, which was cool. We were also able to take a dip in the crystal clear waters of the bay.

For Christmas day I was really relieved to be by family this time of year. Nick had arrived as well, so we all had Christmas in Auckland and enjoyed a few days of down time, which was a nice change of pace from the normal hubbub of traveling. Our Christmas Day included a huge breakfast full of banana pancakes, eggs and bacon. Then we all headed to Muriwai beach to have some fun in the sun. Finally capped it off with an awesome dinner lamb, kumara and rice. It was a great day. Time to head down south though and start a few more adventures and explore more of NZ!

BYRON BAY, AUSTRALIA got WOPPED

My next and last stop in Australia was Byron Bay. There was so much anticipation for this place. Everyone I had talked to about traveling through Australia said that Byron was a must. After an overnight bus from Sydney I arrived and the weather was absolutely perfect. I dropped my bags immediately and made a mad dash to the beach. I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. Mountains, rolling hills and a gorgeous lighthouse as you look left to right. Crystal clear aqua blue ocean water and white sandy beaches with plenty of activities to keep busy. The town had a really a cool chilled out vibe too with lots of sweet little crafts and clothing shops. For my three days here I received some great weather! Managed to get a few days of surfing and a few hours of some skateboarding. I did a great walk up to the lighthouse and really had a chance to lay back and relax. This was by far my favorite place in Australia, but I’m ready to head over New Zealand for Christmas and see my family and friends! Enjoy the pictures and Happy Holidays!

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA got WOPPED

After Melbourne I did not know what to expect of Sydney. Most of the Australian people that I’ve met have seemed to strongly favor one or the other. You can definitely tell there is a strong rivalry between the two. Unfortunately, most of my time in Sydney was met with rain, but I tried to take in the sites as much as possible. From the famous Bondi Beach to the Sydney Opera house to the Blue Mountains region, I was thoroughly impressed with what Sydney had to offer within a 1-hour radius. I really enjoyed my time there and thought the city was very livable. Not to mention how clean the city was. There was just so much to see and explore in Sydney. As you see in my pictures, I found a lot of interesting things.

As I made my way to Bondi Beach, the weather did not seem to want to cooperate with me too much, but I still got a great vibe from this surfer’s town. Even with potential storms, people where still outside being active and hanging out. It was such a relaxed environment. I managed to do one of the famous walks from Bondi to Coogee, which is a amazing scenic walk before it down poured. If I ever had to live in Sydney, I would definitely live in at this city beach town.

After a few days in Sydney, I decided to take a train out to Katoomba where the weather was forecasted to be a little nicer. Katoomba is the home of the Blue Mountain ranges. Tall rocky peaks with lush eucalyptus rainforests spanning the vast valleys. This place was truly a tropical paradise! I managed to get a few long hikes in capture every angle of this region. Check out the photo’s and the tune I was rocking most of the time below.
